As far as lenses go you need to look for EF or EF-S lenses which are all fully compatible with your camera. Not the earlier Canon FD lenses as they are not compatible at all.
AF means autofocus which all the EF and EF-S lenses are except for the odd specialist lens which need not concern you. USM is Canons silent focussing system which most but not all of the lenses have. Those which do not have it are a bit noisier and slower to focus and are the cheaper models like the 50mm f1.8 which is nevertheless a cracking little lens for the money. IS is Canons stabilisation system. IS in later lenses is more effective. The modern Sigma lenses are fully compatible with your camera as long as you get a Canon fit version of any lens. Some of the older lenses may not be compatible (I have one which is not unfortunately) Sigma have their own terminology which you can check out on their website. Hope that helps. |

yeah the lack of AF lenses for the Panasonic (and other M43s cameras) is a bit of an issue, though with cheap adapters you can use a huge range of older MF lenses. The Canon 400D is very capable camera, I think you'll find that it AFs faster than the G2 (it certainly is faster that the G1). There are loads of lenses for the Canon and some are great value, the 50 f1.8 is a bargain at ~£85 new.
