Default Basic filter for Canon M50?

I need a clear filter for my lens but I only need it as a protector for the glass so it doesn’t need to do anything particular other than that. Are there any filters which also allow the lens cap to stay on? What’s a good general purpose filter which I can leave on for most situations. I take portraits and landscapes and occasionally night time outdoor shots. Almost never take any indoor shots, if that helps.

In all my 60 years as an amateur photographer I've never placed a protective filter on any of my lenses. IMO placing extra glass in front of a lens can only degrade an image.
