Lens hoods
I was on a web site looking at lens hoods and there are different shapes, petal , and circular ones.
What if any differance does this make and which is better. fireblade Ps sorry for the dumb question. Last edited by fireblade; 28-05-10 at 13:41. |

Different focal length need different hood types, the shorter the focal length the shorter the hood. On zooms with wide focal ranges a petal type is used as it is both short and long. Circular ones are for primes or zooms with a fairly narrow focal range e.g. 17-40.

Basically you get the hood that was designed for your lens.

To correct Alex , a petal hood has different lengths of petal to match the orientation of the film/sensor. A petal hood has a wider spread on the top and bottom leaves, and relatively stubby leaves on the sides. This allows the hood to give maximum shielding without causing vignetting. Circular hoods are most often found on longer length lenses where the field of view is so narrow that the length of the petals is by and large irrelevant.

Before you buy, you must know what size fits in your lens. Lenses are of various sizes therefore lens hoods too. You can simply search in Amazon like Lens hood for "lens name".
I recently bought one for Nikon 18-105mm and it costs me only £2.99. Very happy with the price and quality. |
