Tokina 10-24 or Sigma 10-20mm. Help

Hey Guys

I have around £400 to spend on a wide angle lens but i just dont know what to do. I have heard that both lenses are great but the Sigma is either loved or loathed. Im in the Lake District again in April and really want to have this decision nailed as soon as i can. Can anyone help please??

I ended up buying the Canon 10-22 which is awesome although a bit more expensive ... you could always sell you D7000 and come over from the dark side

I've only heard good things about the sigma, & I think you'll find the Tokina is 12-24 ... an the extra 2mm at the wide end make a HUGE difference - I looked at the sigma 12-24 full frame & decided against it.

Thank you guys i really appreciate that. I was leaning towards the Sigma as i had long heard that it was the better lens and had that extra 2mm which i appreciate is a lot however the Tokina threw me a little as it delivers great results but the down side is the lack of any zoom, its practially a fixed lens. Also i hear with the Tokina there is a real mix in good and bad lenses due to the production methods at the factory so some of the lenses are great and others are dogs but then i have read the same about the Sigma. Anyway im off to Croydon Jessops to look at both today in my lunch. I will also have to compare the Sigma f3.5 and the F4 to each other. Its going to be a long lunch!!!!

Only heard good things about the 11-16 2.8 tokina, thats my next lens purchase. If thats any help. Also you may want to consider the 11-16 is a f2.8 as apposed to the 12-24's f4.

Thank you surfg1mp but i made the jump and boufgt the Sigma 10-20 F3.5 and i am so chuffed with it. I loved the Tokina but the lack of any zoom made it fall behind the Sigma for me. I am so glad i made the decision i did as i have been taking a lot of photos of architecture of late and that extra 1mm and the zoom adjustment in the hand has been so beneficial and given me some stunning results which i will be posting on here soon.

I cant rate the Sigma highly enough, its a stunning lens regardless of price! It has fantastic light bursts and the bokeh is really nice too. Dont write it off, if you can try one i think you will be very impressed.

If i had the dosh it would be the Tokina for me as it will produce better sharpness
and the distortion levels are far less at the wide end compared to Sigma
the Tokina 2.8 11-16mm gets rave reviews the short focal range enables it to produce super sharp images along it length
the bigger the zoom range the more chance of sharpness fall of along the focal length

Jimsloan where do you get the information that it will produce a sharper image. In most reviews i have read they have been much the same but in others i have read that the Sigma actually was sharper in the middle. Also if you are talking about the F4 10-20 then yes the outer edges were slightly affected but the 3.5 doesnt have the same problems. Have you tried both??

Do you by any chance have a Tokina?

It's indeed an excellent lens, especially for some Lake District night sky
