I remember some years ago setting up a University project which entailed capturing high speed movement as an "H" beam under load test failed catastrophically, the experiment was called the bending moments of "H" and "I" beams. I was into all sorts of electronics in those days and proceeded to build a high speed flash unit, this used a 4000 volt 8.0 microfarad capacitor firing through a high voltage flash tube, it was initiated by a photoelectric trigger broken by the "H" beam as it failed. I can't remember the exact figures but the flash duration was something like 1/100000 of a second, fast enough to capture at least six positions of movement on one 35mm frame. I'm surprised I'm still around after messing arbout with those sorts of voltages!!!
