Default Whats going on ?

Yesterday my virus check would not open, so I re-installed it.
It was fine all day, I scanned the HD, and both backup HDs, no issues.
This morning it would not open again, I removed all parts of it and did another re-install, again scanning everything, all fine again.
Any thoughts?
I was a bit concerned to find out there is a form of malware that's able to stop anti virus software and get your info.
If this is so, how do I find and eradicate it, any help would be appreciated.

Good news! I found an anti malware called INTEGO it is rated as the best you can get so I downloaded it along with their "premier" private browsing program ( encryption for my details), and installed it, it was a bit long winded but it worked
My antivirus now works and my computer is noticeably faster, so worth the forty odd pounds for the knowledge I am not having my details stolen.
