Default Another memory card question

What is the difference in Sandisk, ultra SDHC, extreme 2,3 etc? I just got a new camera & was sold a Sandisk ultra card. Is this old stock, as I can only see adds for extreme cards? The card works fine so just looking for info.

The difference between the older and newer cards is usually the write speed. The quicker a camera can write the image to the card, this is dictated by the cards write speed, ie, 30X 40X extreme 111s I think is around 133X unless your a sports tog with a high end DSLR it shouldnt really concern you.

The Extreme cards have a faster read/write speed than the Ultra cards. Depending on what kind of photography you do, how fast your camera is, and how fast the card reader on your PC is, this may or may not be a problem.

If you do landscapes, you don't need a fast card. If you do motorsports, you may have a need for the faster cards. If the camera is slow to write to the card, it may be irrelevant how fast the card is as the camera may be slower still.

If it works fine for you, then there's probably no need to get a faster card.

You can still get Ultra cards. Example:

Picstop are my preferred supplier of cards as they are most likely to be genuine items. The vast majority of cards on ebay are fakes - slow cards branded as being fast ones.

Edit: snappy beat me to it!

Thank you for the info.
Used Fuji xd befor so speed not a problem. May buy a spare card in a few weeks, not from ebay. Camera is a Lumix G1 a step or two up from my old bridge camera.
Thanks again. Arthur
P.s. Just looked at picstop, added to favorites.

A memory card with slower write speed may affect the performance of your camera as it might take more time to save a photo in the memory. So it may slow down the performance of your camera. The one I use works really nice and it's write speed is 45 MB/Sec. It's from SanDisk.
